Creating memorials-whether through journals, songs, photos, letters, or other creative expressions-adds sparkle and meaning to daily life, helping us cherish God's precious gifts rather than letting them slip away unnoticed. Jim Elliot wrote, "Wherever you are, be all there." In our fast-paced society, we're often distracted by a hundred things, missing the romance of life. Living purposefully means treating each conversation and experience as valuable, shifting from haphazard existence to thoughtful living. I enjoy park outings with my children far more when fully present than when distracted by my phone. Prayer becomes more meaningful when my mind isn't wandering to dinner plans. Technology and entertainment often steal our focus-Eric and I have cut out movies and television, freeing us to savor true pleasures like bike rides, picnics, and game nights. Consider removing distractions that prevent you from being fully present. Replace mindless entertainment with relationship-building activities. Opportunities for romance abound daily, but we must quiet the world's clamor to see them.

Chapitre 13

The Radiance of Forgiveness

Noble beauty is the refreshing radiance that comes from being a forgiving woman. At eighty-seven, Dolly exemplified this beauty in the nursing home I visited as a teenager. Despite being nearly blind and frail, she radiated joy with her genuine smile and welcoming hands. Her mind remained sharp, her eyes sparkled, and she clearly lived without regrets. In stark contrast was Simone, a former fashion model whose beauty had faded into bitterness. While her dresser displayed glamour shots from her youth, she spent her days complaining and criticizing. The difference between these women was stunning-Dolly glowed with life while Simone wasted away in ugliness. Bitterness and unforgiveness can transform even the most physically beautiful woman into someone hard and unattractive. Conversely, graciousness and forgiveness can make a plain woman radiant. Scripture warns it's "better to dwell in the wilderness, than with a contentious and angry woman" (Proverbs 21:19). As women, we easily become ruled by emotions rather than God's Spirit. When hurt, we naturally want to cling to that pain, meditate on it, and hold grudges. We pout, sulk, or speak critically about those who've offended us. But Christ spoke clearly about forgiveness, illustrating through the parable of the unforgiving servant that we must forgive others as God has forgiven us (Matthew 18:21-35). Forgiveness isn't optional-it's essential to the Christ-life. We cannot maintain a vibrant relationship with Jesus while harboring resentment. Christ even states we won't receive God's forgiveness if we withhold it from others. Though many readers have experienced deep hurts-abuse, rejection, betrayal-God promises to provide the supernatural power needed to forgive. Humility can be measured by how quickly we admit our wrongs. When we ask forgiveness immediately after realizing we've hurt someone, we keep accounts short and show we value relationships above pride. This practice builds Christ-like habits and actually increases others' respect for us. Similarly, when someone hurts us, we must quickly pray and surrender the offense to God before bitterness takes root. Forgiveness is primarily between us and God, not dependent on the offender's repentance. Like Jesus who prayed "Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do," we must love others regardless of their response. In my marriage with Eric, we've maintained this conflict habit for 14 years-never going to bed angry, even if it means staying up all night to resolve issues. This keeps our relationship slate clean and prevents bitterness from growing.

Chapitre 14

Finding Security in Christ Alone

Eating disorders require both medical attention and spiritual healing. They develop when we believe society's lies and seek security outside of Christ. Like any addiction, freedom comes through repentance and Christ's transforming power. Sin doesn't overtake us all at once-it begins when we carelessly expose ourselves to pop culture's messages. When tempted to believe "you'd be prettier if you were skinnier," we must immediately counter with truth: "My life is not my own. I've been bought with a price." If you've already fallen into starving yourself or bingeing and purging, confess it to Christ and ask for cleansing. Seek help from godly counselors, medical professionals, and accountability partners, but remember that only Jesus can truly set you free and help you find security in Him alone. A woman deeply in love with Jesus glows with a radiance that overpowers physical flaws. I've seen women with noticeable blemishes light up entire rooms because their passion for Christ effervesces from every corner of their being. My Korean daughter Harper was born without fingers, but at age two, she has no concept of feeling strange about her hands. Her childlike freedom and lack of self-consciousness make others hardly notice her deformity-they see her smile and the sparkle in her eyes instead. Insecurity is simply unhealthy self-focus rather than Christ-focus. When the enemy whispers that everyone notices your flaws, fight back immediately with truth and Scripture. Remember you're created in God's image and precious in His sight. If you have a physical distraction you can address-like crooked teeth or being overweight-prayerfully consider doing so. But don't postpone shining with Christlike confidence until your flaws are fixed. As St. Francis said, we need "serenity to accept the things we cannot change, courage to change the things we can, and wisdom to know the difference." Psalm 45 reveals that true feminine beauty captivating a noble warrior comes from being "all glorious within." A godly man transformed by Christ will primarily be attracted to your heart, not your physical appearance. In the eyes of the man God has chosen for you, Christ's beauty shining through you will be radiant. Christina Rosetti wrote in 1880: "How beautiful are the arms which have embraced Christ, the hands which have touched Christ... How beautiful are the hands which have worked the works of Christ, the feet which treading in His footsteps have gone about doing good..." There is no other path to lasting beauty, no other way a woman can radiate with the sparkle of her King. To effervesce with captivating loveliness, we must be overtaken by the Author of all true beauty, exchanging our ugliness for His royal splendor through daily passionate intimacy with Him.
