Randolph Frederick Pausch (1960–2008), auteur de La Dernière Leçon, était un professeur d'informatique pionnier et un conférencier inspirant, connu pour avoir su allier l'innovation technique à la sagesse de vie. En tant que professeur à l'Université Carnegie Mellon, spécialisé dans l'interaction homme-machine et la réalité virtuelle, Pausch a cofondé l'Entertainment Technology Center et a développé la plateforme de programmation « Alice », utilisée dans le monde entier pour enseigner le codage par le biais de la narration.

Sa dernière conférence, prononcée après avoir reçu un diagnostic de cancer du pancréas en phase terminale, s'est transformée en un phénomène viral sur YouTube et en un mémoire classé n°1 des ventes du New York Times sur l'art de saisir les opportunités et de réaliser ses rêves d'enfant.

Le message de Pausch a touché des millions de personnes grâce à ses apparitions dans The Oprah Winfrey Show, une émission spéciale de Diane Sawyer sur ABC, et un TED Talk visionné plus de 15 millions de fois.
