Née à Manille, aux Philippines, en 1971, de la Cruz est une auteure philippino-américaine renommée, connue pour ses romans de fantasy pour jeunes adultes et adolescents qui mêlent magie, aventure et thèmes contemporains.

Sa narration s'inspire de son parcours multiculturel et de sa formation en histoire de l'art et en anglais à l'Université de Columbia.
