The human-dog bond is so profound it alters our physiology, particularly affecting oxytocin, the "hug hormone" that creates good feelings during physical contact with loved ones. Japanese research found people whose dogs gazed at them longer experienced greater oxytocin increases and reported more satisfaction with their pets. When owners focused completely on their dogs for thirty minutes, they experienced decreased blood pressure and increased levels of oxytocin, beta-endorphins, prolactin, phenylethylamine, and dopamine. Remarkably, dogs showed similar hormonal changes, suggesting mutual bonding feelings. Our relationship with dogs began when wolves took advantage of food near human settlements. These self-domesticated proto-dogs responded to human gestures, provided early warning systems by barking at strangers, served as emergency food sources, and eventually began following human hunters. Natural selection continued favoring the friendliest dogs, who-unlike wolves-prefer human company over their own kind. This self-domestication process raises a profound question: could other species, including humans themselves, have followed a similar evolutionary path where friendlier individuals gained survival advantages and accidentally became smarter? The evidence increasingly suggests that dogs have civilized us as much as we've domesticated them.
