An Investor's Checklist

Even with a well-constructed environment and robust investment rules, we're bound to make mistakes. The brain isn't designed to work through all possible outcomes with meticulous logic. The complexity of business combined with our irrationality around money guarantees errors. A checklist serves as the final circuit breaker in my decision-making process, helping to avoid obvious and predictable errors. The checklist concept came from Atul Gawande, a surgeon and Harvard professor who wrote about using checklists to manage extreme complexity in medicine. When Mohnish Pabrai read Gawande's 2007 New Yorker article, he immediately saw its application to investing-another field where complexity causes even experts to make preventable mistakes. Mohnish pursued this idea with intense rigor, assembling a comprehensive analysis of investing errors made by ourselves and other notable investors like Buffett and Munger. My checklist includes about 70 items that continue to evolve. Before making any investment, I review it to catch what I might be missing-a process that sometimes takes just 15 minutes but has led me to abandon dozens of potential investments. The checklist redirects my wandering attention systematically, particularly valuable for someone with ADD. Crucially, a checklist must be personalized to reflect your unique experiences and vulnerabilities. A checklist isn't a shopping list of desirable attributes but a survival tool based on past mistakes. Like pilots who use checklists to avoid errors that caused previous crashes, investors should design checklists to prevent repeating costly mistakes. In 2001, I thoroughly researched for-profit education companies, becoming an expert in the sector. I invested $1 million in EVCI Career Holdings Corp., owner of Interboro Institute. The company had an innovative model providing education to underprivileged students while receiving financial aid grants. My investment soared to $7 million in 18 months as student numbers and profits grew. However, when the board granted enormous pay raises to executives, I became angry and sent a tactless letter. When I met with the chairman/CEO to propose stock options instead of salary increases, he exploded in public, shouting at me in a restaurant. I later discovered he was going through a bitter divorce involving his EVCI stock. This experience taught me to consider how executives' personal circumstances might affect their judgment.

Doing Business the Buffett-Pabrai Way

While books like "The 48 Laws of Power" promote Machiavellian strategies for success, I've discovered a more enlightened approach through Warren Buffett and Mohnish Pabrai. By observing these mentors both from afar and up close, I've learned to become not just a better investor and businessman, but a better person. As Warren told us at our charity lunch: "Hang out with people better than you, and you cannot help but improve." Nothing is more important than bringing the right people into your life-relationships are the killer app that tilts the playing field in your favor. My decade-long friendship with Mohnish Pabrai perfectly illustrates the power of meaningful relationships built on sharing, trust and generosity. I've observed how Mohnish consistently focuses on what he can do for others rather than what they can do for him. This approach compounds goodwill and paradoxically brings far more returns than taking ever could. Buffett understands this perfectly, as he told a class at Georgia Tech: "When you get to my age, you'll measure success by how many people you want to have love you actually love you... The only way to get love is to be lovable... The more you give love away, the more you get." The most important aspect of our education as investors and human beings is finding exceptional role models. While books provide wisdom, people are the ultimate teachers, often conveying lessons through presence rather than words. Charlie Munger demonstrates this through his punctuality-Li Lu discovered that no matter how early he arrived for meetings with Charlie, Munger was always there first, sometimes requiring them to sit separately reading newspapers until the appointed time. I've improved my own circles by joining organizations where I regularly meet people better than myself-the Entrepreneurs' Organization, Young Presidents' Organization, and Toastmasters. The greatest benefit wasn't networking but observing exemplary people-like Don Keough at a Berkshire meeting, who made me feel like the only person who mattered during our brief interaction, teaching me the importance of being fully present with everyone I meet. From Mohnish, I learned to never be needy or demanding with others. His example showed me it's possible to be a servant without losing autonomy, self-respect, or ambition. I now focus more on what others need from me instead of trying to get them to fulfill my needs-a profound psychological shift. At networking events, I developed a rule to try to do something for everyone I meet, which helped me distinguish between "givers" and "takers" and attract better people into my life.

The Quest for True Value

Value investing isn't just a stock-picking strategy to accumulate wealth, but a quest for true meaning beyond money and professional advancement. While material rewards are nice-I still drive a Porsche and spent $6,000 on an espresso machine-the inner journey toward becoming our best selves is what matters most. This involves asking what our wealth is for and how we can help others. Understanding our inner landscape is crucial for successful investing, as our fears, insecurities and biases can sabotage rational decision-making. My own investing approach is deeply influenced by my family history as German Jews who lost everything to the Nazis before rebuilding in Israel. This narrative shapes my conservative approach-I never use borrowed money and feel tremendous responsibility managing my family's finances, seeing it as repairing damage from 70 years ago. Unlike Mohnish, whose childhood prepared him to handle financial volatility calmly, I have deep-seated fears about loss. Rather than trying to change this wiring, I've learned to understand and work around it. I've used numerous tools for inner growth: seven years of Jungian therapy, religious study with rabbis, career coaching, philosophical counseling, and self-help books. Adversity itself has been my greatest teacher, though painful and slow. My D.H. Blair mistake showed me I needed to address my avarice and stop measuring myself by external standards. For me, the most powerful accelerator of inner growth has been participating in "mastermind" groups-close-knit gatherings where professionals share confidentially. These groups provide relief, perspective, and options without judgment. The inner journey helps investors confront vulnerabilities that the market inevitably exposes, whether arrogance, fear, greed, or need for social approval. The ultimate reward isn't just investment success, but becoming our best selves.
