Stephen Edwin King est l'auteur à succès de Les Trois Cartes et l'un des écrivains d'horreur et de fantasy les plus influents de l'ère moderne. Né à Portland, dans le Maine, en 1947, King a publié plus de 60 romans et 200 nouvelles couvrant l'horreur, la fantasy, la science-fiction et le suspense. Les Trois Cartes est le deuxième volet de sa série épique La Tour Sombre, mélangeant la dark fantasy avec des éléments de western et d'horreur — une approche transversale des genres qui a défini une grande partie de la carrière de King.

La percée de King a eu lieu avec Carrie en 1974, suivi de classiques comme Shining, l'enfant lumière, Ça, Le Fléau et Misery. Son œuvre est créditée d'avoir relancé la fiction d'horreur à la fin du XXe siècle, lui valant d'être reconnu comme le « Roi de l'horreur ».
