After two hours of bombardment without response, Major Anderson finally gave the order to return fire at 6:30 a.m. Captain Doubleday pulled the lanyard on Sumter's first shot, which struck the Iron Battery on Morris Island but bounced harmlessly off its sloped roof. Though Sumter's most powerful guns sat on the exposed parapet, Anderson had ordered these not be used due to the danger to his men. Instead, they fired from the relative safety of the lower casemates. Confederate guns pounded the fort relentlessly, with mortar shells raining down from high arcs and embedding in the parade ground before exploding, shaking "the fort like an earthquake." By Saturday morning, April 13, the Confederate gunners' aim had noticeably improved. Around nine o'clock, a mortar shell burst through the roof of the officers' quarters, starting a significant fire. The blaze threatened their main magazine containing thirty thousand pounds of gunpowder. Anderson ordered men to move powder barrels to safer locations, a dangerous task as mortar shells and hot cannonballs rained down. By eleven a.m., about one-fifth of the fort was ablaze. Dense black smoke filled the casemates, forcing some men to lie on the ground with handkerchiefs over their mouths while others positioned themselves near embrasures for air. At 12:48 p.m., the Confederate gunners finally succeeded in bringing down the fort's flag when a shot shattered its staff. Meanwhile, Fox's relief expedition remained helplessly offshore, scattered by storms and lacking the firepower to force entry into the harbor. The ships could only watch as smoke rose from the distant fort. With Sumter burning and supplies exhausted, Anderson agreed to surrender when former Senator Louis Wigfall, acting without authorization, rowed to the fort under a white flag to negotiate terms. Though there was confusion when official Confederate representatives arrived later, unaware of Wigfall's mission, the surrender was finalized with Anderson receiving the honor of a hundred-gun salute to the American flag before departure. Tragically, during this ceremonial salute on Sunday, April 14, an accidental explosion killed Private Daniel Hough and mortally wounded Private Edward Galloway-the first casualties of the Civil War. After a solemn burial, with soldiers from both sides presenting arms, Anderson ordered the salute resumed but shortened to fifty discharges. At four o'clock, as Sumter's band played "Yankee Doodle," the garrison marched out through the shattered gate and boarded a waiting steamer.

The Aftermath: A Nation Transformed

On Monday, April 15, Lincoln issued a proclamation calling for 75,000 troops from state militias to suppress the rebellion. The proclamation's effect was explosive-Northern states reacted with jubilation while Southern governors expressed outrage. Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee soon seceded, while border states remained in the Union but refused Lincoln's request for troops. When the Baltic carrying Major Anderson and the Sumter garrison reached New York Harbor on April 18, passing steamers saluted with whistles and bells while "cheer after cheer went up from the ferry-boats and vessels." Lincoln issued a formal note of gratitude, followed by a personal acknowledgment to Anderson. Later, Lincoln would confide to an aide, "Of all the trials I have had since I came here, none begin to compare with those I had between the inauguration and the fall of Fort Sumter." The Civil War would kill 750,000 Americans over the next four years, with South Carolina alone losing 21,000 men-more than a third of its fighting citizens. The end of slavery cost the state's planters three hundred million dollars in human capital overnight. In a poignant epilogue, exactly four years after Sumter's fall, President Lincoln arranged for the American flag to fly over the fort again, with former commander Robert Anderson raising it during a public ceremony on April 14, 1865. As Anderson stepped forward to speak, witnesses noted he seemed to be "wrestling with intense emotion." He told the crowd, "I restore to its proper place this flag which floated here during peace, before the first act of this cruel Rebellion." Later that night at a special dinner at the Charleston Hotel, Anderson proposed a toast to "the good, the great, the honest man, Abraham Lincoln." Unknown to the celebrants, at that very moment, Lincoln lay dying from an assassin's bullet at Ford's Theater in Washington. Edmund Ruffin, who had proudly boasted of firing the first shot at Fort Sumter, lived to see the Confederacy's defeat. Unable to bear life under Union victory, he ended his life on June 18, 1865, after writing in his diary: "I here declare my unmitigated hatred to Yankee rule-to all political, social and business connections with Yankees, and the perfidious, malignant and vile Yankee race."

The Moral Reckoning: Slavery's Central Role in the Conflict

Throughout the Fort Sumter crisis, the institution of slavery remained the central, inescapable issue driving the conflict. Despite later attempts to reframe the Civil War as primarily about states' rights, the words and actions of secession's architects made their motivations unmistakable. Mississippi's secession declaration stated plainly: "Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery-the greatest material interest of the world." Confederate Vice President Alexander Stephens declared slavery the "cornerstone" of the new government, explicitly rejecting the Declaration of Independence's assertion that all men are created equal. Even as the secession crisis unfolded, the slave trade continued unabated. In January 1860, Richmond trader Hector Davis noted that "good young men are as high or higher than I ever saw them." Charleston's Ryan's Mart conducted at least eight slave auctions that month alone, selling 658 enslaved people including infants and children-among them a three-year-old boy named Little Joe. Mary Chesnut, despite supporting secession, recorded her moral revulsion at a slave auction she witnessed: "South Carolina slave holder as I am my very soul sickened." She particularly condemned the sexual exploitation of enslaved women, writing famously: "Like the patriarchs of old, our men live all in one house with their wives and their concubines; and the mulattoes one sees in every family partly resemble the white children. Any lady is ready to tell you who is the father of all the mulatto children in everybody's household but her own. Those, she seems to think, drop from the clouds." James Henry Hammond, architect of the "Cotton is King" doctrine, embodied the moral corruption of the slave system. Despite his public defense of slavery as a "positive good," he engaged in sexual relationships with enslaved women-first Sally Johnson, whom he purchased at eighteen, and later her daughter Louisa when she turned twelve. When his wife Catherine discovered this relationship in 1850, she temporarily left him. The Civil War would ultimately resolve what Lincoln called the "central disturbing cause" of American politics. In his second inaugural address, Lincoln would acknowledge slavery's role with stark clarity: "One-eighth of the whole population were colored slaves, not distributed generally over the Union, but localized in the southern part of it. These slaves constituted a peculiar and powerful interest. All knew that this interest was somehow the cause of the war." The Fort Sumter crisis, as Larson masterfully demonstrates, was not merely about federal property or states' rights-it was the moment when America finally confronted its original sin, beginning a bloody reckoning that would transform the nation forever.
