Alice Malsenior Walker, autrice de La Couleur pourpre et lauréate du prix Pulitzer, est une romancière pionnière et une militante des droits civiques dont l'œuvre place les voix des femmes afro-américaines au premier plan. Née en 1944 de parents métayers en Géorgie, son vécu face à l'injustice raciale et sa résilience féministe imprègnent profondément ce classique de la littérature épistolaire, qui explore les thèmes du traumatisme, de l'identité queer et de la libération.

Diplômée du Spelman College et de Sarah Lawrence, Walker est devenue la première femme noire à remporter le prix Pulitzer de la fiction en 1983.
