The Four Forces of Enchantment
Bogart introduces the Four Forces of Enchantment-surprise, mystery, risk, and adventure-as fundamental elements that spark learning journeys. She compares them to physics forces that operate whether we're aware of them or not, occasionally making life feel "supercharged" and "delightful." These forces power romantic comedies, fairy tales, and theme parks, as well as significant life experiences like falling in love or traveling to new places.
Homeschooling isn't a separate "thing" but a lifestyle lived 24/7 where learning happens naturally. When education went well in Bogart's home, it rarely resembled traditional schooling. Her best days with her kids had a serendipitous quality-an "almost by accident" feel. Box-checking gave her temporary satisfaction but produced forgettable learning. Meanwhile, unschooling's hands-off approach sometimes led to boredom and sibling squabbles. She felt bullied by competing educational philosophies, always feeling she wasn't doing it "right enough." Yet right before her was evidence of astonishingly bright learning seasons in her children's lives-what researchers call "natural learning" and what she calls magic, enchantment, brave learning.
One morning in the 1990s, after reading about the Pony Express at breakfast, Bogart's seven-year-old Noah asked if they could pretend to be ponies delivering mail. They invited neighborhood families who dropped their homeschool schedules to join them. Children wrote silly notes, stuffed them into envelopes, and were assigned stations along their street. Bikes whizzed by as riders transferred knapsacks of mail as quickly as possible. This spontaneous activity incorporated writing, history, physical activity, cooperation, and friendship-accidental learning that happened because she was willing to ditch the morning lessons and follow Lady Inspiration into the Forces of Enchantment.
The first force, surprise, startles a person into delight. Every school subject contains astonishing elements; our task is to unearth them with our kids. For young children learning to read, Bogart discovered that writing down their unique thoughts and stories in little handmade books created magical moments of realization-that those scribblings preserved their words! This sparked her daughter Johannah's desire to read so she could also write, declaring on her fifth birthday: "Today I will learn to read!"
To help kids see learning differently, begin by seeing yourself differently. Break character and let them see the goofy, generous, inquisitive you. Surprise your children by rousing them for backyard breakfasts, dressing in costume for history lessons, admitting when you don't know something, doing projects alongside them, playing their video games, skipping hard subjects occasionally, taking lessons to coffee shops, or lending unexpected support.
The second force, mystery, revels in depth, awe, wonder, patience, and feeling your own size as you embrace the great, big, unknowable universe. While surprise sparks interest, mystery sustains it. Like kindling added to fire, mystery keeps learning burning. Each subject contains unknowable depths-there's always more to discover. Children naturally ask endless questions, showing sustained fascination when taken seriously. The key is to find the inscrutable and awe-inducing, then draw it out! Resist giving answers and instead enjoy the unknowing.
The third force, risk, acknowledges that homeschooling itself is a risk-you've boldly decided that you're more capable of educating your children than credentialed teachers. While this risk motivates you as a parent, your children need their own bold challenges to feel equally engaged. Jim Collins's concept of the "BHAG" (Big Hairy Audacious Goal) applies perfectly to homeschooling. Rather than vague mission statements about education, children need tangible, energizing goals that grab them "in the gut."
When Bogart asked her children what they'd love to do if money and time were no object, her eleven-year-old daughter Johannah said she wanted to learn vintage dances and attend a ball like in Jane Austen's novels. Though overwhelming, Bogart supported her by finding lessons, bartering for the fees, and providing transportation. Their considerable commitment paid off when Johannah danced at a full-scale ball in a period-accurate gown. Supporting your child's BHAG is risky-requiring time, resources, and faith-but when we prioritize what our children love, they gain satisfaction that fuels them through less inspiring work.
The fourth force, adventure, implies an active journey with some element of hazard-not an all-inclusive vacation. Unlike risk, which applies to thoughts and ideas, adventure is about location-somewhere beyond your house. Homeschooled kids need chances to test their self-sufficiency away from parental oversight. Academic adventures include co-ops, dual enrollment, online classes, and specialized learning experiences like zoo classes or Shakespeare programs. Sports, dance, music, art, and theater provide venues where kids experience different expectations than at home. Learning to be away from home is crucial, starting with sleepovers at grandparents', then progressing to friend sleepovers, youth group weekends, scouting trips, and specialized camps.
