À propos de l'auteur

Thomas Hardy (1840–1928) était un romancier, poète et réaliste victorien anglais dont l'exploration de la vie rurale et de l'injustice sociale a fait de Tess d'Urberville une pierre angulaire de la littérature du XIXe siècle.

Né dans le Dorset, en Angleterre, Hardy a puisé son inspiration dans les paysages et la dynamique sociale de son Wessex natal, une région fictive au cœur de ses « romans de caractère et d'environnement ».
