Despite his high-profile career, he maintained strict confidentiality, never divulging business details regardless of how much I probed - inadvertently pushing me toward my future career of asking questions. With a significant age gap between me and my older brothers, I spent much of my childhood at home with just my parents, who became my best friends. My mother was our family's backbone, selflessly dedicating herself to our happiness. My father, though often working long hours, was my confidant and taught me the importance of integrity, hard work, and community service. A mathematical genius who loved sports, he passed his passion for athletics to me, taking me to boxing matches and watching Broncos games together. Tennis dominated my early years - I'd practice nine hours daily during summers, won youth tournaments, and gave lessons. Golf entered my life through my father, who took lessons from Paul Runyan - a pro who had played in the first Masters in 1934 paired with Bobby Jones. After Runyan told my father I had "the most natural golf swing" he'd ever seen, I later featured him in a television segment that was picked up by ABC affiliates and ESPN, setting the foundation for my career covering golf - something that made my father immensely proud. My father and I began our most cherished tradition in 1992 when I invited him to join me at the Masters. For over twenty years, we shared this special week together - he'd sit with me in the broadcast tower, keeping score while I called the action. We established our own rituals: walking the course at dawn, attending the Nantz party on Tuesday nights, dining at the clubhouse, visiting the Bessers at the Double Eagle Club. We witnessed iconic moments together - Tiger's first win, Palmer's last round, impossible shots that defied physics. Some years, we even played the course on Monday mornings after the tournament. These weren't just golf experiences; they were the foundation of our deepening bond. At the 2013 Masters, I noticed my father slowing down at age eighty-four. He couldn't walk the course as much, didn't climb the tower stairs, and stood behind the ropes rather than in his usual spots. That December, after a fall at home left him bedridden, he decided he didn't want to live that way. During our final conversation before he passed, he randomly asked if I knew Michael Strahan, saying simply, "I like him." Hundreds attended his funeral, testament to his extraordinary impact. I couldn't return to Augusta immediately - the void was too painful. When I finally did in 2016, I placed flowers on our favorite tower and the Bessers left an empty chair with my dad's favorite vodka beside it. The tradition isn't the same without him, but I carry his lessons with me: be honest, help others, make a difference. He wasn't perfect, but he was as close as anyone I've ever known.
