Carlos César Salvador Arana, connu sous le nom de Carlos Castaneda (1925-1998), était un anthropologue d'origine péruvienne et l'auteur à succès de Histoires de pouvoir (Tales of Power), une œuvre séminale dans le chamanisme et la spiritualité New Age. Publié en 1974, Histoires de pouvoir relate la conclusion de son apprentissage auprès de Don Juan Matus, un chamane Yaqui, explorant les thèmes de la conscience altérée, de la réalité non-ordinaire et du mysticisme indigène.

Castaneda a obtenu sa licence et son doctorat en anthropologie à l'UCLA, où ses premiers livres — L'Herbe du diable et la petite fumée, Voir et Le Voyage à Ixtlan — ont servi de base académique, bien que leur authenticité ait été largement remise en question.
