Toni Morrison (1931–2019), auteure de Sula et lauréate des prix Nobel et Pulitzer, demeure une figure de proue de la littérature américaine, renommée pour son exploration lyrique de l'identité noire et des traumatismes historiques.

Née Chloe Anthony Wofford à Lorain, dans l'Ohio, Morrison a imprégné ses romans de thèmes liés à la race, à la communauté et à la complexité morale, s'inspirant du folklore afro-américain et de sa formation académique en anglais et en lettres classiques.
