Frost in open wounds proved lethal, while hard-frozen ground caused increased stomach wounds from explosions. By mid-December, doctors noticed soldiers dying suddenly without diagnosable illness. Dr. Girgensohn, the Sixth Army pathologist, performed fifty autopsies under brutal conditions and found that half showed clear signs of starvation: atrophied hearts and livers, absent fat tissue, and severely shrunken muscles.
Despite their desperate situation, the Sixth Army became obsessively focused on Christmas celebrations.
