Dathan Auerbach est l'auteur de Penpal et une figure pionnière de la fiction d'horreur passant du creepypasta au roman. Né et élevé dans le sud des États-Unis, Auerbach s'est fait connaître en 2011 lorsqu'il a commencé à publier des histoires d'horreur sur le subreddit r/NoSleep de Reddit sous le pseudonyme 1000Vultures.

Sa première histoire, « Footsteps », est devenue une sensation virale et a évolué pour devenir Penpal, un roman d'horreur psychologique explorant les traumatismes de l'enfance, le harcèlement obsessionnel et la mémoire fragmentée.

Auerbach a financé la publication du livre via une campagne Kickstarter qui a récolté plus de 1000 % de son objectif initial, démontrant la fidélité de sa communauté en ligne. Il a poursuivi avec Bad Man (2018), un thriller sur un homme à la recherche de son frère disparu. Les histoires de Penpal ont été adaptées pour la première saison de The NoSleep Podcast en 2011, et les droits cinématographiques ont été mis en option en 2012. Auerbach a été reconnu comme « une figure importante de la génération d'écrivains d'horreur post-King ».
