During WWI, German scientists Haber and Bosch developed a process to create artificial fertilizers by fixing atmospheric nitrogen-a breakthrough that transformed agriculture and enabled feeding billions more humans by turning fossil-fuel energy into food. Modern human lifestyles would bewilder our ancestors. Traditional peasant households have been replaced by specialized industrial farming and urban living. Most people now live in entirely human-shaped urban environments, enjoying unprecedented nutrition, health, and doubled life expectancy. Violence has declined significantly-public executions, slavery, and domestic violence are no longer acceptable social norms. Human activities are now transforming the entire biosphere-changing the distribution of living organisms, altering ocean and atmospheric chemistry, rearranging landscapes, and unbalancing ancient chemical cycles of nitrogen, carbon, oxygen and phosphorus. Since the industrial revolution, humans have pumped approximately 400,000 megatons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, raising levels higher than any seen in almost a million years. In just 200 years, human population grew from 900 million to over 6 billion, a rate 1,000 times faster than during the agrarian era. Energy consumption increased 22 times between 1800-2000, growing 20,000 times faster than in agrarian times. Unlike the agrarian revolution, where benefits went to elites, fossil fuels created a global middle class while still supporting massive population growth.

The Future of Our Origin Story: Where Do We Go From Here?

The next hundred years are critically important as our actions will have consequences lasting thousands of years. Like heroes in myths facing quests, humanity must navigate potential catastrophe. If we mismanage our complex global systems, we risk societal collapse, warfare, famine, and disease-returning survivors to subsistence living within agrarian energy constraints. Despite the universe's indifference to our fate, humans set out on quests with goals, like all living organisms. Our current quest has three aims: avoid collapse, ensure the Good Anthropocene benefits all humans, and protect the biosphere. These goals align with the UN's 2015 sustainable development goals and the Paris Climate Accord, which together represent remarkable global consensus on addressing poverty, inequality, and environmental degradation. Perhaps fossil fuels were merely the activation energy needed to kick-start modern civilization, and now we can transition to gentler, more sustainable energy flows. A mature Anthropocene might feature zero population growth, poverty elimination, less extreme wealth concentration, and economies valuing quality of life over endless growth. We'll need to respect planetary boundaries, particularly regarding climate change and biodiversity loss, while developing renewable energy and more efficient resource use. If we successfully navigate this transition to a sustainable world, human history will appear as a single threshold of increasing complexity culminating in conscious biosphere management. Looking optimistically to the middle future, we might see global governance structures superseding nation-states, fusion power providing clean energy, and humans potentially managing planetary or even galactic energy flows. On cosmological timescales, continental drift will create a new supercontinent called Amasia. In a few billion years, our sun will expand into a red giant, eventually sterilizing and consuming Earth before becoming a white dwarf. Our galaxy will collide with Andromeda, creating turbulence among stars. The universe itself will continue expanding at an accelerating rate, and in the extremely distant future, stars will stop forming, galaxies will become graveyards, and eventually even black holes will evaporate. Yet here we are, conscious beings capable of understanding this vast story. Through collective learning, humans have constructed a modern origin story that connects us to the universe and to each other. This story reminds us that we are not separate from nature but part of it-stardust that has become conscious and now bears responsibility for a planet. In this critical moment of human history, our origin story offers not just understanding but perhaps the wisdom needed to navigate our shared future on this remarkable blue planet.
