Kenneth Elton Kesey (1935–2001) était l'auteur révolutionnaire de Vol au-dessus d'un nid de coucou et une figure séminale de la littérature contre-culturelle américaine. Né au Colorado et élevé dans l'Oregon rural, Kesey a étudié la création littéraire à l'Université de Stanford, où il s'est porté volontaire pour des expériences gouvernementales sur les drogues psychédéliques et a travaillé comme aide-soignant dans un hôpital psychiatrique. Ces expériences ont directement nourri son premier roman, un drame psychologique poignant qui explore les thèmes de l'individualité, de l'oppression institutionnelle et de l'abus de pouvoir au sein du système de santé mentale.

Publié en 1962, le livre a connu un succès commercial et critique immédiat, établissant Kesey comme un maître du commentaire social et de la narration axée sur les personnages.
