Small Data: The Power of Personal Information

As consumers increasingly collect personal data through online activities and Internet of Things devices, this consumer-owned "small data" is becoming more valuable than company-owned big data. The 2015 Consumer Electronics Show highlighted this shift with products like Wi-Fi tea kettles, smart tennis rackets, and fitness trackers-all collecting granular personal data that belongs primarily to consumers rather than brands. The key development is that we're transitioning from merely creating data through our behavior to becoming real-time consumers and owners of our own data. While companies traditionally focused on analyzing vast amounts of collected data, the more valuable question now becomes: how can consumers be enticed to share their self-collected data to create unprecedented customized experiences and products? Small data is often deeply personal with little value to anyone except the collector-like Ian MacLeod's viral project photographing his son daily for 21 years. Unlike big data, these personal collections allow immediate, meaningful insights about our lives and behaviors. As IDC analyst Mike Fauscette notes, "big data is useless" unless transformed into "smart data" that's contextual, relevant, and delivered to the right person at the right time. Small data's greatest benefit is its immediate actionability. While it may not provide broad conclusions about entire populations, it excels at solving short-term challenges. Rufus Pollock, founder of the Open Knowledge Foundation, believes "small, linked data is far more valuable" than big data, arguing that "this next decade belongs to distributed models not centralized ones, to collaboration not control, and to small data not big data." The proliferation of connected devices and social platforms means we're producing unprecedented amounts of data that isn't traditionally owned by brands. This creates a new model where consumer-owned data rivals brand-owned data, with the key question being how consumers will choose to share their information. Small data-immediately actionable versus broad and complex big data-will be judged by how easily it can be shared and acted upon, determining whether it provides real value or just sits unused on servers as its relevance expires. The trend offers two key strategies: First, offer to use consumer-owned data-even if you can't download it directly, you can still benefit by asking consumers to share their self-collected data to help them select better products. Second, watch for new popular products gaining widespread adoption-as more people adopt smart devices like Nest thermostats, it creates opportunities to engage with them about related topics like energy conservation.
