Richard Nathaniel Wright (1908–1960) était un romancier et critique social américain, célèbre pour ses explorations percutantes de l'injustice raciale dans l'Amérique du XXe siècle.

Son roman révolutionnaire Native Son (1940), un portrait poignant du racisme systémique et de la pauvreté, est devenu le premier livre d'un auteur noir sélectionné par le Book-of-the-Month Club, le propulsant vers une renommée internationale. Originaire du Mississippi, Wright s'est inspiré de ses expériences sous la ségrégation des lois Jim Crow, détaillées dans ses mémoires à succès Black Boy (1945), pour façonner des œuvres politiquement engagées qui exposaient le coût psychologique de l'oppression.
