Paula Hawkins, née en 1972 au Zimbabwe, est l'auteure à succès de Au fond de l'eau, un thriller psychologique complexe explorant les thèmes de la mémoire, du traumatisme et des secrets dangereux au sein d'une petite ville anglaise.

Après avoir emménagé à Londres en 1989 et étudié à Oxford, Hawkins a travaillé comme journaliste financière pendant 15 ans avant de se tourner vers la fiction. Son roman phare, La Fille du train (2015), s'est vendu à plus de 23 millions d'exemplaires dans le monde et a été adapté en un film à succès avec Emily Blunt.

Au fond de l'eau, publié en 2017, met en avant son style caractéristique de narrateurs peu fiables et d'intrigues sombrement entrelacées examinant les « femmes à problèmes » et la violence cachée. Son thriller suivant, Celle qui brûle (2021), a été nommé pour le prix du Thriller de l'année aux British Book Awards. Au fond de l'eau est devenu un best-seller n°1 du New York Times, et DreamWorks en a acquis les droits cinématographiques peu après sa publication.
