Dr. Jack Shonkoff identifies three stress response types: positive (brief increases in heart rate and hormones that build resilience), tolerable (temporary activation with support systems enabling recovery), and toxic (prolonged activation without adequate support). When Kylie's mother restricts her phone access during homework, Kylie's mood improves, her anxiety decreases, and her grades recover. Her case demonstrates how easily our attention system can be impacted by external forces, and how distractions can trigger or worsen anxiety.
Research confirms that regardless of age, multitasking strains working memory, concentration, and deep thinking. Neuroscience and psychology both support that multitasking overloads our executive functions, potentially triggering anxiety. Conversely, narrowing our focus can improve productivity and reduce bad anxiety.
Scientific research strongly supports meditation's ability to remedy both hyperfocus and fractured attention. Studies show that mindfulness meditation, integrative body-mind training, and nature exposure all improve attention and emotion regulation. Just three months of intensive meditation training enhanced visual detection abilities in healthy adults, while even brief meditation practice (twenty minutes daily for five days) improved inhibitory control and reduced stress hormones.
Exercise powerfully improves attention and reduces anxiety. Even a single workout session enhances performance on attention-demanding tasks. Creativity is "the ability to produce work that is both novel and appropriate." It functions as a Darwinian process, selecting which new ideas are useful-whether Einstein's theory of relativity or a fashion designer pivoting to make face masks during COVID. From a neuroscience perspective, creativity is information processing that can be emotional or cognitive, deliberate or spontaneous.
Contrary to the old right-brain/left-brain creativity myth, neuroscientists have identified three major brain networks that generate creativity.
