Rather than resolving the case on narrower grounds, Taney nationalized the denial of citizenship to all Black people, declaring they "had no rights which the white man was bound to respect." This made whiteness the essential condition for American citizenship. Despite these setbacks, resistance continued. Frederick Douglass emerged as a prophet of an America that embodied its founding principles, insisting the nation "shall not brand the Declaration of Independence as a lie." He recognized that both North and South needed to revise their vision of America, as even Northern states had severely restricted Black rights despite abolishing slavery.
