By the late 1700s, when inhabitants of the continent first began calling themselves Americans, a new form of religious experience emerged that would define American spirituality. Jonathan Edwards, a Massachusetts minister and Yale graduate, became central to the Great Awakening, a religious revival that began as America's first youth movement. During services, respectable people would moan, weep, scream, jerk, and faint - physical manifestations Edwards saw as "distinguishing marks" of supernatural presence.
The movement gained enormous momentum when George Whitefield arrived from England. This "Woodstock for American Christianity" crystallized a new American religious subculture characterized by "orgiastic individualism." Christianity became increasingly synonymous with evangelical Christianity - sinners experiencing personal relationships with Jesus through emotional conversion experiences.
Alongside religious fantasy, pseudoscientific movements flourished. Homeopathy became America's original "alternative medicine," using a travesty of scientific logic. Its inventor claimed that "like cures like" - substances causing symptoms in healthy people could cure similar symptoms in sick people. Homeopathic preparations involved extreme dilution, shaking mixtures repeatedly until virtually none of the original substance remained. Despite being pure magical thinking, homeopathy swept America, with homeopathic medical colleges established nationwide and thousands receiving homeopathic M.D. degrees.
Mesmerism and phrenology similarly captivated Americans. Mesmerists attributed all disease to electrical imbalance, claiming to clear blockages with magnetized rods or "energized" hands. Phrenology, which claimed to read personality traits by examining skull topography, became America's dominant mental health approach for most of the nineteenth century.
These pseudoscientific practices reinforced the American idea that opinions and feelings equal facts. The cross-fertilization of religious and pseudoscientific fantasies created new movements and products. By the 1840s, branded "patent medicines" became an industry, selling elixirs, tonics, and pills containing mostly sugar or alcohol, sometimes opium or cocaine, marketed as secret potions of exotic natural ingredients making extravagant claims - "There is no sore it will not heal, no pain it will not subdue."

America officially decided that ignorant dupes were on their own in 1815, when the Supreme Court unanimously ruled against a tobacco seller who felt cheated after selling his crop without knowing the British naval blockade was ending. The Court essentially declared that in America's free market, buyer and seller beware - telling less than the whole truth had received blanket indemnity.
The California Gold Rush of 1848 rhymed with America's founding myth - excitable people abandoning settled lives to travel thousands of miles west to a wilderness utopia with docile natives and gold for the plucking. For a thousand days, life in the California gold fields was an enchanted alternate reality. Without land titles or expensive machinery, you could find gold in streambeds, sitting in dirt, or knotted in tree roots. Just an ounce was worth a good weekly wage back east, and early prospectors sometimes found pounds per week.
By early 1849, The New York Herald declared the prospect of easy California gold had "set the public mind almost on the highway to insanity." Over the next several years, up to 5 percent of America's young men rushed west - perhaps 100,000 in 1849 and 200,000 in 1850. While total national gold production for the half-century before 1847 was thirty-seven tons, California produced an average of seventy-six tons per year for the next decade.
This Gold Rush permanently changed Americans' thinking about impossible dreams and luck. Life could become a fabulous romance, reality as marvelous as any tall tale. Personal reinvention happened wholesale as soft Boston clerks and daydreaming Pennsylvania farmhands transformed into colorful Wild West characters. The Gold Rush resurrected the distinctly un-Puritan ambition of the first Virginia settlers - the freedom to grab for instant wealth with little supervision. Where our founding mindsets overlapped - Massachusetts religious zealots and get-rich-quick Virginians - was in their determination to believe the unbelievable, live enchanted lives, and make fantasies real.

Buffalo Bill and the Fantasy-Industrial Complex
Buffalo Bill Cody's life blurred reality and fiction in remarkable ways. After genuine frontier experiences as a scout and buffalo hunter, at 23 he became the subject of a "true" but highly fictionalized newspaper story. By 26, while still occasionally working as an actual Indian fighter, he began performing as himself in theatrical productions.
In 1876, three weeks after Custer's defeat, Cody killed and scalped a Cheyenne warrior while wearing his Buffalo Bill stage costume. Within months, he was touring in a play based on this event, displaying Yellow Hair's actual weapons and scalp. His "Buffalo Bill's Wild West" show featured Native Americans playing themselves alongside white performers. Remarkably, he enlisted Sitting Bull, one of the commanders at Little Bighorn, as his co-star. The show transformed news and history into entertainment in near-real time, with real historical figures playing simulated versions of themselves.
At the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago, this blurring of fantasy and reality reached new heights with the White City - temporary neoclassical buildings covered in plaster of Paris that were simultaneously fantasy and reality. The fair featured reproductions of medieval buildings, foreign villages, and historical structures alongside actual artifacts like Sitting Bull's cabin. The fair attracted 27 million visitors who absorbed one key message: fantasy seems superior to reality, and the distinction between them hardly matters.
By the century's end, America had established a "fantasy-industrial complex" where selling dreamy fabrications became routine. Modern American Christianity, news media, advertising, entertainment, politics, and pharmaceutical industries all developed on the premise of blending the fanciful with the real.

The 1960s Big Bang: When Fantasy Went Mainstream
The 1960s marked a profound inflection point in American culture, when the fantasy-prone aspects of our national character exploded into the mainstream. As one founder later described it, "Esalen was the center of the cyclone of the youth rebellion... a pilgrimage center for hundreds and thousands" seeking transcendence through consciousness expansion, LSD, sexual liberation, and bodily awareness. Simultaneously, intellectual attacks on rationality gained momentum. Michel Foucault argued in 1961 that rationality itself was a "regime of truth" and form of oppression. Thomas Kuhn's groundbreaking 1962 book on scientific revolutions suggested that science progressed not through steady accumulation of facts but through "paradigm shifts" driven by belief changes among scientists - making science seem more like belief than objective inquiry. Sociologists Berger and Luckman's influential "The Social Construction of Reality" (1966) argued that all reality is constructed by social powers, with science being just another mythology.
Anthropology embraced this new paradigm almost completely, declaring oracles, diviners, and magical practices equivalent to reason and science. Carlos Castaneda's bestselling books about his drug-induced magical experiences with a Yaqui sorcerer were celebrated as legitimate anthropology, with one reviewer claiming they represented "what really happened."
In late 1960s California, young Christian evangelists - the "Jesus People" or "Jesus freaks" - emerged as a small but conspicuous subset of hippie culture. As Tom Wolfe noted, "practically all the Jesus People were young acid heads who had sworn off drugs...but still wanted the ecstatic spiritualism" which they found in fundamentalist evangelical Christianity. This movement marked the beginning of Christianity's revivification and radicalization that would later become synonymous with the political right.
By the early 1970s, fantastical beliefs went mainstream as Americans embraced new spiritual movements. Publishers and media eagerly promoted fantasies as nonfiction: Uri Geller's spoon-bending autobiography, Raymond Moody's "Life After Life" about near-death experiences (which spawned academic conferences at Yale), and "The Secret Life of Plants" claiming plant sentience. By 1970, about 40% of Americans had visited. This Disney effect spawned hundreds of "living history" museums nationwide, with increasingly elaborate authenticity standards. Park rangers began "doing first person" as historical figures, and places like Plimoth Plantation embraced "experimental archaeology" where interpreters spoke 17th-century English dialects and never broke character.
The 1960s saw Americans transform into participants rather than mere consumers of fantasy. Civil War reenactments began in 1961, with thousands of men in period costumes pretending to fight historic battles. Renaissance faires emerged in 1963 in Los Angeles, while the Society for Creative Anachronism formed in Berkeley in 1966. Dungeons & Dragons provided millions more with indoor medieval fantasy role-playing. Even motorcycle gangs became Wild West outlaw reenactors with their colorful names and special wardrobe.
Disneyland's genius was creating immersive environments that became models for real-world development. Developer James Rouse, who called Disneyland "the outstanding piece of urban design in the United States," essentially invented shopping malls and food courts. By the 1960s, he was building nostalgic "new towns" like Columbia, Maryland with old-fashioned "villages." This approach transformed abandoned urban spaces like Boston's Quincy Market and Manhattan's South Street Seaport into "festival marketplaces" - dying urban areas revived as themed, imaginary versions of themselves.

Conspiracies do exist. Sometimes groups secretly execute agendas to achieve or maintain power and wealth. Americans thus began with some reason to believe conspiracies drive politics and history. Our peculiar history and psychology created a recipe for conspiracy thinking. Protestantism itself was an alternative truth-telling system replacing the Vatican's supposedly corrupted version. Christianity itself resembles belief in the grandest conspiracy of all: God as mastermind executing His all-encompassing scheme with angels and prophets as co-conspirators. Like religious explanations, conspiratorial explanations connect dots to impute intention and design everywhere, ignoring the greater power of randomness and happenstance.
The alien abduction phenomenon gained mainstream credibility in the late 1980s and early 1990s through the involvement of respected figures like Harvard psychiatry professor John Mack. His 1994 book "Abduction" received praise from major media outlets despite its rejection of conventional scientific frameworks. Like many post-1960s intellectuals, Mack blamed modernity and rationality for blinding us to spiritual truths, suggesting aliens were actually benevolent beings on a "corrective initiative" to save Earth from environmental destruction.
What began as seemingly harmless fantasy belief evolved into something more consequential, creating a bridge between UFO believers and conspiracy theorists. By 1999, fusion paranoia united both political extremes against a perceived global conspiracy. Two major media phenomena cemented these beliefs in mainstream culture: Art Bell's hugely popular Coast to Coast AM radio show, which aired conspiracy theories nightly to millions, and The X-Files television series, which dramatized government conspiracies with taglines like "I Want to Believe" and "Trust No One."

Trump and the Triumph of Fantasyland

Conservative media's relentless attacks on mainstream press effectively "brainwashed" audiences to disbelieve facts contradicting their opinions, destroying "immunity to false information."
Trump approaches truth as malleable, creating a disturbing power of contradiction that dulls our sensitivity to truth itself. When challenged about false claims - like millions of illegal voters or Obama wiretapping - he defends them as "instinct" rather than fact. His spokespeople struggle to explain his assertions, asking that he be graded on a curve as a political newcomer, or framing his falsehoods as deeply held beliefs rather than statements requiring evidence. When ABC News asked if promoting baseless claims about illegal voting was dangerous, Trump replied, "No, not at all! Because many people feel the same way that I do."

Can America Become Reality-Based Again?
For three centuries, America maintained a dynamic balance between fantasist and realist impulses - like an internal combustion engine powered by endless little explosions of idiosyncratic visions, but with control mechanisms keeping the contraption from blasting apart. The Founders created checks like the Senate to cool the House's passions and the Electoral College to prevent the election of unacceptable charlatans. Religious sects emerged but calmed as they matured. We submitted free markets to constraints that made the system seem fair enough.
But as life became easier, the climate grew more conducive to the looser parts of the American psyche. The 1960s marked a tipping point when our founding Puritan discipline and austerity were discarded while we doubled down on magical thinking and apocalyptic beliefs. After 1970, American individualism and open-mindedness bloomed out of control in the newly tropicalized climate.
Despite my concerns, I remain more optimist than pessimist. Even as we've entered this winter of foolishness and darkness, it has been an epoch of astonishing hope and light as well. During these same decades, Americans reduced violent crime by more than half, decoded the human genome, elected an African-American president, and created artistic masterpieces. Globally, extreme poverty has plummeted from over 40 percent to 10 percent since 1980. I despair of our devolution toward unreason, but not everything has gone wrong.
What can be done? We in reality-based America must keep our zone as large and robust as possible. Our guiding principle should be: You're entitled to your own opinions and fantasies, but not your own facts - especially when your fantastical facts hurt people. We must become less squishy and call out the dangerously untrue. This struggle to make America reality-based again will be less fraught than battles over political correctness, as distinguishing fact from falsehood involves fewer judgment calls about taste or appropriateness.
Fight the good fight in your private life. Don't give friends and family free passes on untruths. Teach children to distinguish between true and untrue as fiercely as between right and wrong. Adopt new information hygiene protocols - would you feed your kids food from strangers or have unprotected sex with people you just met? Apply the same caution to what you read, watch and believe.
Progress isn't inevitable, but neither is decline. Our Fantasyland tendencies were present from the beginning, but our current situation wasn't inevitable. We could regain our national balance. These decades may prove just a strange phase in the American experiment. Nations have survived far worse swerves. The good news: America may now be at peak Fantasyland. We can hope.
