Syphilis treatments were as horrific as the disease itself. Early remedies included lead solution injected into the urethra, but mercury became the standard treatment until antibiotics arrived in the 20th century. "A night with Venus and a lifetime with Mercury" became the grim axiom, as mercury merely moderated symptoms while causing others like spongy bones and tooth loss. Nothing separates us more completely from our past than the staggeringly ineffectual and often terrifying medical treatments. Before anesthesia, surgeons tried bleeding patients to faintness, tobacco enemas, or opiates like laudanum to mask pain. Speed was essential-Samuel Pepys' kidney stone removal took just fifty seconds, though he needed a month to recover.

Early Christianity developed an antagonistic relationship with cleanliness, often equating holiness with dirtiness. The plague led to misguided beliefs that bathing opened pores to "deathly vapors" and dirt provided protection, resulting in six centuries of minimal washing. Water's popularity resurged when Queen Anne visited Bath in 1702, leading to the proliferation of spa towns and seaside resorts. The flush toilet's evolution, from John Harington's 1597 demonstration to Thomas Crapper's reliable Marlboro Silent Water Waste Preventer, marked significant progress in sanitation, despite initial setbacks with early models. Lice persist in two varieties: head lice and body lice, the latter having evolved more recently from head lice.

From String to Style: The Evolution of Clothing and Childhood

In September 1991, German hikers discovered a human body protruding from ice in the South Tyrolean Alps. This wasn't a case for police but prehistorians-the body, nicknamed Otzi, had died over 5,000 years ago with all his tools and clothing intact. This was unprecedented: not a carefully arranged burial but a person found exactly as he had died. Otzi's attire surprised everyone-fur leggings held by leather strips resembling vintage stockings with garters, a goatskin loincloth, and a stylish brown bear fur hat. Most shocking were his bird's nest-like boots with bear skin soles, which replicas proved more comfortable and effective than modern footwear. After an immensely long evolutionary period, Cro-Magnons emerged with one of history's greatest inventions: string. This simple twisted fiber creation enabled clothing, fishing lines, nets, snares, rope, and countless other tools. As Elizabeth Wayland Barber called it, string was "the weapon that allowed the human race to conquer the earth." Fashion throughout history has often prioritized the ridiculous over the practical. Dressing impractically demonstrated one's freedom from physical labor-a status symbol worth more than comfort. The sixteenth century saw starch come into fashion, creating enormous ruffs called piccadills that made eating nearly impossible. When buttons appeared around 1650, they proliferated decoratively on places where they served no function-a tradition that continues today with the pointless buttons on jacket sleeves. Despite being labeled as overdressed in popular consciousness, dandies like George "Beau" Brummell actually brought restraint to men's fashion. Brummell wasn't wealthy or particularly talented-he simply dressed better than anyone before him, with meticulous care rather than extravagance. His daily dressing ritual became a spectacle attended by nobility including the Prince of Wales. Just as Brummell was transforming fashion, cotton was transforming manufacturing. Once more precious than silk, cotton became affordable when the East India Company began importing calicoes from India in the seventeenth century. These light, washable fabrics with colorfast dyes delighted Western consumers but threatened European textile workers, leading to widespread bans on imported finished cotton goods. In the early 1960s, Philippe Aries made the startling claim in his influential book that childhood didn't exist as a concept before the sixteenth century. Though not a specialist, his view that childhood was essentially a Victorian invention gained widespread acceptance. Other historians like Edward Shorter and Barbara Tuchman built on this idea, suggesting pre-modern parents remained emotionally detached from their children due to high infant mortality. However, this represents a serious misreading of human nature and history. While children died in great numbers-often cited as one-third in their first year and half by age five-parents were devastated by these losses. John Evelyn wrote "Here ends the joy of my life" after losing his son, and Shakespeare's lines from King John after his son Hamnet's death reveal profound grief. The very existence of nurseries since 1330 and the word "childhood" since AD 950 contradict the notion that children were inconsequential. Childhood in the past was fraught with dangers from conception onward. Childbirth itself was perilous, with doctors often making matters worse through bloodletting and other harmful treatments. For children, accidental deaths were shockingly common-drowning in pits, being bitten by animals, falling into hot water or being crushed by cart wheels. Economic necessity forced children into labor from incredibly young ages. John Locke suggested poor children should work from age three. Children as young as six worked in mines, often naked in the heat. The most pitiful were chimney sweeps who began around age five, navigating complex flues while masters sometimes lit fires below to hurry them along. Most were physically ruined by age eleven or twelve, with scrotal cancer a common affliction. Just when it seemed life couldn't worsen for England's poor, it did-with the introduction of strict new poor relief laws in 1834. The cost of poor relief had become a national crisis after the Napoleonic wars, and the solution was a network of workhouses designed to be as disagreeable as possible.

In the summer of 1851, as Thomas Marsham settled into his Norfolk property, Charles Darwin delivered his manuscript on barnacles-a dense, scholarly work that established his scientific reputation. That same year, Herman Melville published The Whale (later Moby-Dick), which failed commercially despite his previous successes. By mid-century, discoveries were challenging biblical timelines. John Frere found ancient flint tools alongside extinct animal bones near Hoxne; Father MacEnery uncovered evidence of humans hunting mammoths; Jacques Boucher de Perthes' findings on the Somme plain attracted international attention. The concept of prehistory was emerging. In 1858, Alfred Russel Wallace independently developed the same evolutionary theory as Darwin. Darwin's On the Origin of Species was published in 1859, becoming an immediate bestseller that profoundly unsettled the intellectual world-as he remarked, writing it felt "like confessing to a murder." As British agriculture collapsed, the Liberal government introduced death duties targeting large landowners who were already suffering. The wealthy lived in permanent crisis, selling heirlooms to survive. Paintings, tapestries, jewels, and artifacts poured from British homes into museums and American collections. By the end of the century, approximately 2,000 of Britain's greatest houses had been lost forever. The nineteenth century utterly transformed private life-socially, technologically, hygienically, and in countless other ways. Born in 1822 into an essentially medieval world of candlelight and horse travel, Mr. Marsham lived to witness steamships, telegraphy, photography, indoor plumbing, electric lights, cars, planes, and thousands of other innovations that completely reshaped daily existence. Even the concept of a "weekend" was brand new, first appearing in print in 1879. Returning to the attic where our journey began, I'm struck not by how much has changed since Mr. Marsham's time, but by how little. From the rooftop, the landscape appears timeless, though this permanence is deceptive. Go back 500 years and only the church and some hedgerows would be familiar. Travel 400,000 years and you'd find lions and elephants grazing where our house now stands-creatures whose bones fascinated early antiquaries. What's invisible from the roof is how much energy we now consume to maintain our comfortable lives. Half of all energy produced since the Industrial Revolution began has been consumed in just the last twenty years, mostly by the privileged fraction in wealthy nations. The greatest irony would be if our endless quest for comfort created a world with neither comfort nor happiness-but that would be another book entirely.
