However, these figures obscure crucial differences in energy quality-Congolese rely primarily on burning wood and biomass, while only 24% of Indonesian energy comes from these sources, and almost none of American energy does.
When women like Suparti move to cities, they transition from cooking with wood or rice husks to using liquefied petroleum gas, which produces one-third fewer carbon emissions and saves precious time. Humans have been moving away from wood to fossil fuels for centuries-globally, wood provided nearly all primary energy in 1850 but only 7% today. This transition allows forests to regenerate and wildlife to return.
The real threat to forests isn't energy-intensive factories in poor nations, but rather their absence. Africa has made agricultural progress over the last half century, but manufacturing was actually a higher percentage of the economy in the mid-1970s than today. Contrary to scarcity-driven theories, markets regularly abandoned energy sources long before exhaustion. Marchetti observed humanity's progression toward increasingly energy-dense and hydrogen-rich fuels: wood to coal (twice as dense), coal to petroleum, and petroleum to natural gas (methane with four hydrogen atoms to one carbon).
Despite climate activists like Bill McKibben claiming natural gas is worse for climate than coal, the evidence shows otherwise. Natural gas emits 17-40 times less sulfur dioxide, minimal nitrous oxide, almost no mercury, is one-eighth as deadly counting accidents and pollution, and requires 25-50 times less water than coal. Closing a nuclear plant like Indian Point redirects potential $32 billion in revenue over forty years to natural gas and renewables companies. Sierra Club, NRDC, and EDF have worked since the 1970s to shut down nuclear plants, producing reports claiming neither nuclear nor fossil fuels are needed thanks to efficiency and renewables. Yet almost everywhere nuclear plants close, fossil fuels replace them.
In 2012, Sierra Club's executive director Michael Brune publicly confessed that his organization had secretly accepted over $25 million from fracking pioneer Aubrey McClendon. Brune portrayed this revelation as a principled stand against fossil fuel funding, claiming he'd discovered and rejected the money. In reality, the confession came only after a journalist was about to break the story. More importantly, under Brune's leadership, Sierra Club went on to accept $110 million from Michael Bloomberg, a major natural gas investor.

Apocalyptic environmentalism emerged from the post-WWII crisis of faith when leading scholars rejected teaching morality as unscientific. Environmental apocalypticism intensified during moments of global crisis-Earth Day amid Vietnam War turmoil, nuclear protests during Cold War tensions, and climate change after the Soviet Union's collapse.
According to Ernest Becker's "The Denial of Death," humans create "immortality projects" to manage our fear of mortality. Climate activism offers this psychological benefit-providing courage, meaning, and transformation. Research shows children engaged in climate activism have better mental health than those aware but inactive, and Thunberg's activism helped her escape depression.
After two weeks of Extinction Rebellion's death-focused protests, a British columnist labeled them an "upper-middle-class death cult." Their tactics culminated in protesters blocking London Tube trains, provoking violent reactions from angry commuters. Young climate activists, believing emissions result from malevolence rather than necessary poverty reduction, develop understandable but isolating anger.
