Née en 1988 à New York et ayant grandi dans l'Illinois, Roth a écrit Divergente pendant les vacances d'hiver de sa dernière année à l'Université Northwestern, où elle étudiait l'écriture créative.

La trilogie explore les thèmes de l'identité, du choix et du courage moral dans un Chicago post-apocalyptique divisé par des valeurs basées sur des factions. Allegiant est devenu le livre le plus précommandé de l'histoire de HarperCollins lors de sa sortie en 2013.

Roth a enrichi la série avec Four: A Divergent Collection et s'est ensuite aventurée dans de nouveaux territoires avec la duologie Carve the Mark (Marquer les ombres). Son œuvre a été adaptée en films majeurs mettant en vedette Shailene Woodley.
