Rand's break with conservatism stemmed from three fundamental differences: her devout atheism and contemptuous dismissal of Christianity; her insistence on pure selfishness as the moral foundation of her system; and her defense of free markets based on Nietzschean heroic individualism rather than the conservative understanding of markets as enabling freedom for families and communities. While Rand championed the power of reason, her philosophy often exalted her own reason above reason itself. As her disciples multiplied, she demanded absolute assent, with excommunication for dissenters. Objectivism became cult-like, with Atlas Shrugged as their Bible. Psychologically, Rand manifested every clinical symptom of Narcissistic Personality Disorder. This raises a startling possibility: what if Objectivism itself is ultimately a projection of a personality disorder? What philosophy would better match a narcissist's worldview than one exalting selfishness as the highest virtue? However we answer these questions, conservatism is not narcissism; it is not the worship of selfishness. And Objectivism, as Rand would tell you herself, is certainly not conservatism at all.
