Shari Lapena is a Canadian novelist whose path to fiction was indirect and gradual rather than precocious in the public eye. She has said that she wanted to be a writer from childhood, but chose law school because writing did not seem like a practical profession. After several unsatisfying years as a lawyer, she returned to school and became an English teacher, a role she found more suited to her temperament. The decisive shift came when she was at home raising her children and began writing seriously. Her first published novels, Things Go Flying and Happiness Economics, were comic, literary works released by a small Canadian press; the second was shortlisted for the Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour, giving her an early measure of recognition.
