Octavia E. Butler

Né(e): June 22, 1947 – Pasadena, California, United States

Octavia E. Butler was an American science fiction writer whose work explored power, race, gender, hierarchy, and survival. Best known for Kindred, Parable of the Sower, and Dawn, she became a foundational voice in speculative fiction, winning Hugo and Nebula awards and, in 1995, a MacArthur Fellowship.

Biographie et Parcours de l'Auteur

Octavia E. Butler was born in Pasadena, California, in 1947 and grew up in a working-class household shaped by loss, discipline, and close observation. Her father died when she was young, and she was raised largely by her mother and grandmother. Shy, tall, and often isolated, she found refuge in books and began writing early, partly because the stories around her rarely made room for a Black girl like herself. She studied at Pasadena City College and later attended the Clarion Science Fiction Writers Workshop, experiences that strengthened both her technical skill and her conviction that speculative fiction could be a serious vehicle for social, historical, and moral inquiry.
