Michel Foucault

Né(e): October 15, 1926 – Poitiers, Vienne, France

Michel Foucault was a French philosopher and historian of ideas whose work examined power, knowledge, institutions, sexuality, and modern subjectivity. His major books include Madness and Civilization, Discipline and Punish, and The History of Sexuality. Widely translated and taught worldwide, he reshaped the humanities and social sciences.

Biographie et Parcours de l'Auteur

Michel Foucault was born in Poitiers, France, on October 15, 1926, into a family of physicians, a background that gave him early proximity to the institutional worlds of medicine and authority that he would later scrutinize so closely. He studied at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris, where he received rigorous training in philosophy and also pursued psychology and psychopathology. Those years were intellectually formative and personally difficult, yet they helped sharpen his lifelong interest in how societies classify normality and deviance. After teaching and cultural posts in France, Sweden, Poland, and Germany, he completed the work first published as History of Madness, a major turning point that established his method of tracing how institutions and categories are historically made rather than naturally given.
