Dean Koontz was born in Everett, Pennsylvania, in 1945 and raised in Pennsylvania. He studied at Shippensburg State College, won an Atlantic Monthly fiction competition as a senior, then worked first in the Appalachian Poverty Program and later as an English teacher near Harrisburg. The decisive turn in his life came when his wife, Gerda, offered to support him for five years while he tried to build a writing career; by the end of that wager, she had moved into the business side of his work and Koontz was established as a full-time author.
