David Crystal is a British linguist, author, and broadcaster whose work focuses on the English language, linguistics, and communication. He is known for books including The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Language and The Cambridge Encyclopedia of the English Language, and for making language study widely accessible through more than 100 published works.

David Crystal was born in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, in 1941, spent his earliest years in Holyhead, and moved with his family to Liverpool in 1951. After St Mary’s College, he studied English at University College London from 1959 to 1962, then worked at the Survey of English Usage under Randolph Quirk. He lectured at Bangor and then Reading, where he later held a chair for a decade. His first book appeared in 1964, launching a career that gradually expanded from academic linguistics into public writing, reference publishing, broadcasting, and consultancy.
