Brian Portnoy is a behavioral finance author and educator focused on the psychology of money, investing, and financial decision-making. He wrote The Investor’s Paradox and The Geometry of Wealth and co-edited How I Invest My Money. Founder of Shaping Wealth, he is known for multiple bestselling books on money and meaning.
Brian Portnoy’s career took shape at the intersection of academic inquiry and practical finance. He earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan and later completed a Ph.D. at the University of Chicago, then built a long professional apprenticeship across research, strategy, portfolio, and education roles at firms including Morningstar, Mesirow, Chicago Equity Partners, and Virtus. Over more than two decades in the hedge fund and mutual fund worlds, he developed a reputation for translating complicated investment ideas into clearer, more usable frameworks. That experience became an early turning point: it pushed him toward the view that financial results are shaped not only by markets and products, but by expectations, behavior, and the stories people tell themselves about money.
