Dav Pilkey is an American children’s author and illustrator best known for Captain Underpants and Dog Man, comic-style series that blend humor with themes of friendship, creativity, and empathy. His books have sold tens of millions of copies worldwide, been translated widely, and earned major children’s publishing awards and adaptations.
Dav Pilkey, born on March 4, 1966, built his career out of experiences that once made school difficult. As a child he was diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD, and teachers often sent him into the hallway, where he spent the time drawing and inventing the earliest comic versions of characters who would later become Captain Underpants and Dog Man. His school years were marked by disciplinary trouble, but also by a persistent comic imagination. A decisive turning point came in college, when an English professor read his notebook cartoons, encouraged him to make children’s books, and helped turn a habit of doodling into a vocation. His first book, World War Won, won a national competition in 1986. ((https://pilkey.com/userFiles/uploads/pdfs/dav-pilkey-bio.pdf))
