Using "slow exits," such as verbalizing the need for a ten-minute pause when feeling a shutdown coming on, can also bridge the gap between internal withdrawal and external connection.

    Authenticity does not mean being an open book to everyone at all times; it involves finding a "through line" of values that remain consistent across different social circles.
