The "warm food" legend was popularized years later by Arthur Conan Doyle in a fictional short story that many readers mistook for a factual account.

What happened to the Mary Celeste after she was recovered?

Following the mystery, the ship gained a reputation as a "hoodoo" or cursed vessel, making it difficult to find crews and profitable voyages. After twelve years of minor accidents and financial losses, her final captain, Gilman Parker, intentionally ran her aground on a reef near Haiti in 1885 as part of an insurance fraud scheme.
