The old way of doing things—where 'aid' was just a one-way street from rich to poor—is dead. Development is being redefined as 'economic transformation' rather than just 'poverty reduction,' moving from a model of top-down orders to one of genuine co-creation.
Future of development cooperation coalition

The Future of Development Cooperation Coalition, or FDCC, is a newly formed group of commissioners dedicated to overhauling the global development system. Currently, many developing nations must manage over sixty different assistance agencies, each with unique rules and agendas. The FDCC aims to address this bureaucratic chaos by reforming how countries work together, moving away from outdated models that have been in place for eighty years to create a more streamlined and effective international aid framework.
The traditional Washington Consensus, where the United States and Europe primarily set the rules for global development, is currently unraveling. As we enter a multipolar era, new players like China, India, and the Gulf states are introducing different philosophies to the international stage. This shift represents a move away from one-way aid toward a system that reflects a more diverse set of global powers and cooperative strategies, signaling a major overhaul in international relations.
The FDCC is holding its first major meeting in Washington alongside the World Bank and IMF Spring Meetings to signal a significant shift in global development. By planting a flag during these high-profile gatherings, the coalition is challenging the old way of doing things where aid was a one-way street from rich nations. This timing highlights their intent to reform the existing eighty-year-old system and establish a new path for international cooperation in a changing world.
