Every single high-level mental function starts outside of us. We aren’t just influenced by our culture; we are literally constructed by our social interactions.

The Social Roots of the Mind refers to the theory by Soviet psychologist Lev Vygotsky that high-level mental functions originate outside the individual. Rather than thoughts being built from the inside out, Vygotsky argued that functions like logical memory and voluntary attention start on a social level. This perspective suggests that our internal narrator and problem-solving abilities are actually echoes of social interactions with teachers, parents, and peers that we eventually internalize.

The Genetic Law of Cultural Development is a core principle in Vygotsky's work stating that every function in a child's cultural development appears twice. It first manifests on the social level, known as the interpsychological stage, occurring between people. Later, it appears on the individual level, known as the intrapsychological stage, inside the child. This law flips the traditional view of development by suggesting that social learning precedes and enables individual cognitive growth.

In Vygotsky’s Soviet psychology framework, the interpsychological level refers to the social space where learning happens between individuals through interaction and culture. The intrapsychological level is the subsequent stage where those social experiences are internalized into the individual's own mind. This transition explains how external social tools and dialogues eventually become the private thoughts and mental functions we use to solve complex problems or navigate difficult tasks independently.
