You might spend the next hour trying to prove how smart or kind you are, but you’re essentially fighting an uphill battle against a verdict that was reached before you finished stepping through the door.

Research from Princeton University indicates that it takes only a tenth of a second, or 100 milliseconds, for the brain to reach a verdict on someone’s character. This window is so brief that it is essentially instantaneous, occurring in the time it takes to blink an eye. While having more time to look at a person can increase your confidence in your judgment, the actual assessment of traits like trustworthiness or competence rarely changes after that initial tenth of a second.
This is an evolutionary survival mechanism driven by the amygdala, a primitive brain structure responsible for fear and threat detection. For ancient humans, survival depended on the ability to instantly distinguish between a friend and a foe. Because of this "low-level" brain response, we prioritize scanning for social threats or safety over rational traits like intelligence. Even today, our brains use this ancient hardware to "thin-slice" a stranger’s vibe before our conscious, rational mind can even process the interaction.
It is a mix of both. Studies on "thin-slicing" show that tiny snippets of behavior can be remarkably predictive of objective outcomes, such as how a teacher will be rated by students over an entire semester. However, we are also heavily influenced by "facial stereotypes" and the "halo effect." For example, people with "baby faces" are often perceived as more trustworthy regardless of their actual character, and attractive people are frequently assumed to be smarter or kinder than they may actually be.
While you cannot change your basic facial structure, you can manage your "expressive behavior," which includes your posture, gestures, and tone of voice. Research suggests that being animated and expressing genuine emotion makes you more likable. Additionally, focusing on being a good listener and showing interest in others can build trust quickly. Even if you make a mistake, laughing at yourself can preserve your reputation by making you appear more authentic and relatable to others.
The "liking gap" refers to the tendency for people to be far more self-critical after a first meeting than the other person actually is. While you might be ruminating on a specific awkward joke or a stumble in your speech, the other person is likely focusing on your "global vibe" and general warmth. Because people are usually processing your nonverbal cues and intentions rather than your minor verbal mistakes, you are often liked more than you realize.
