Sierra uses a multi-layered memory system to avoid the "goldfish" problem of forgetting previous chats. It separates "Short-term memory" (the current conversation) from "Episodic memory" (a diary of specific past events) and "Semantic memory" (distilled knowledge about user preferences). By using a "paging" or "virtual context" approach, the system only pulls the most relevant memories into the AI's immediate "brain," keeping the reasoning sharp and grounded in factual customer data.
Bounded agency is the concept of giving an AI agent the freedom to navigate a conversation naturally while keeping it within strict "guardrails." Sierra achieves this through "Supervisor Agents" or "Jiminy Crickets" that monitor interactions from the outside. These supervisors can detect if an agent is repeating mistakes, deviating from the brand's tone, or being targeted by "prompt injection" attacks, allowing them to intercept the conversation or escalate it to a human if necessary.
Sierra uses an "outcomes-based" model rather than charging a flat fee or per-message rate. They typically only get paid when an agent successfully resolves a task completely on its own. This aligns Sierra's incentives with the customer's success, as they are motivated to make the agents as capable and autonomous as possible to ensure the business sees a real return on investment.
