It is a slow retreat. Imagine your gums as a high-necked sweater protecting your teeth; over time, that collar starts to stretch or slip down, exposing the neck—which, in this case, is the tooth root.
Receding gums

The first sign of gum recession is often the subtle appearance of teeth looking longer than usual, sometimes referred to as the long tooth look. Because this shift happens gradually, just a fraction of a millimeter at a time, many adults do not notice the change until it reaches a more advanced stage. Paying close attention to the length of your teeth during your daily routine can help identify this silent shift early on.
Gum recession is a very common dental health issue affecting roughly half of all adults to some degree. The prevalence increases significantly with age, with eighty-eight percent of individuals over the age of sixty-five experiencing receding gums. Despite how widespread it is, the condition is often not discussed frequently because it progresses slowly and does not always cause immediate or sharp pain in the early stages.
As gums recede, they can leave the tooth root exposed, which often leads to increased sensitivity. You might experience a sharp zing or discomfort when consuming ice water or sweet foods because the exposed root is sending a signal to the nerves. While this sensitivity is a common symptom of gum disease and recession, the lack of constant, sharp pain often leads people to brush off these early warning signs.
