Rare earth elements, or REEs, are a group of seventeen specialized minerals that serve as the silent metal infrastructure for modern technology. While they are not actually rare in the Earth's crust, finding them in high enough concentrations to mine is a significant challenge. These elements are essential because they power the devices we rely on daily, including smartphones, and are critical for the global green energy transition.
Rare earth elements are vital for advanced military hardware and national deterrence. For example, a single F-35 fighter jet requires approximately 417 kilograms, or nearly a thousand pounds, of rare earth materials to function. These strategic minerals are integrated into almost everything that moves, sees, or communicates in a modern military context, making them indispensable for defense technology and sophisticated aerospace engineering.
Despite their name, rare earth elements are relatively common throughout the Earth's crust. The difficulty lies in the fact that they are rarely found in concentrated deposits that are economically viable to mine. This makes the extraction of REEs a complex puzzle, as the materials are often scattered rather than being grouped together, which complicates the production of the specialized minerals needed for modern infrastructure and high-tech applications.
