Psyché est la cadette des trois filles d'un roi et d'une reine antiques, dotée d'une beauté si parfaite que le langage humain ne suffit pas à la décrire. Sa grâce absolue attire les foules, qui lui offrent des hommages normalement réservés aux divinités. Cette admiration mondiale finit par vider les églises et détourner les pèlerins des autels de Vénus, faisant de Psyché, malgré elle, une rivale pour la déesse de l'amour.
Vénus, le principe vivifiant de l'univers et patronne de la beauté, ne supporte pas la concurrence déloyale d'une simple mortelle. Elle voit en Psyché une usurpatrice qui éclipse sa propre divinité sur terre. Pour laver cet affront ultime et répondre à son indignation, la déesse décide de frapper fort en organisant un plan de vengeance impliquant son fils Cupidon, afin de punir la jeune femme pour sa beauté insolente.
Cupidon, également connu sous le nom d'Éros dans la version grecque, est chargé par sa mère Vénus d'une mission chirurgicale. Il doit utiliser ses célèbres flèches pour que Psyché tombe éperdument amoureuse de l'être le plus abject, le plus hideux et le plus méprisable de la création. Cependant, le destin et une possible maladresse vont transformer ce plan de vengeance classique en un voyage initiatique pour l'Âme.
