When you’re making an arbitrary choice, your brain might just be drifting, but when you have to weigh values, when you’re 'choosing' rather than just 'picking,' the neural signature changes entirely.
Is Free Will an Illusion?








The readiness potential is an electrical signal in the brain that researchers noticed occurs right before a person moves. In famous experiments conducted by Benjamin Libet, this brain activity was detected about half a second before participants reported having the conscious "urge" to move their wrists. This suggests that the brain initiates actions before the conscious mind is even aware of the decision, leading some to argue that free will is an illusion and that our conscious minds are simply taking credit for decisions already made by our biology.
Not necessarily. While early studies showed brain activity predicting arbitrary movements (like flicking a wrist) up to ten seconds in advance, newer research by Uri Maoz suggests a different story for meaningful decisions. When participants made deliberate choices with real-world consequences—such as donating money to a specific charity—the "readiness potential" disappeared. This indicates that the brain processes "picking" (random, meaningless tasks) differently than "choosing" (deliberate, value-based decisions), suggesting that conscious deliberation plays a more significant role in important life choices.
This is a major point of debate between "determinists" and "compatibilists." Some argue that if "luck goes all the way down" to our genes and environment, our system of praise and blame is shaky. However, others suggest a "consequentialist" view: we hold people responsible because it is a practical necessity for a functioning society. By treating individuals as agents who can respond to reasons, threats, and promises, we maintain social order and encourage people to use their "competencies" to learn and change, regardless of the underlying biochemical causes.
"Picking" refers to making arbitrary, meaningless decisions where there is no real preference or consequence, such as choosing which hand to raise or which identical sock to put on first. In these cases, brain activity may simply be "neural noise" that builds up until an action occurs. "Choosing," on the other hand, involves weighing values and deliberate reflection, such as deciding on a career or a charitable donation. Neuroscience shows that the neural signatures for these two types of actions are different, implying that our agency is most robust during the "choosing" process.
The script suggests that freedom may come from "grabbing hold of your strings" by understanding your own biology and environment. While you may not be able to control every unconscious neural process, you can use your conscious mind to "bias" your future choices. For example, someone might use their current will to remove sweets from their house to influence their future behavior. In this view, free will isn't a magical power, but rather the ability to use information and self-awareness to steer a more intelligent course.
