Explore the physics of electric fields, the triboelectric effect, and electrostatic induction. Learn how static charge creates an invisible aura of influence.

At the most fundamental level, nothing is actually 'touching' in the way we imagine. It’s just fields interacting with other fields, pushing and pulling across the voids.
2. Electric Fields • Definition of electric field • Electric field due to point charges and charge distributions • Electric field lines • Motion of charges in electric fields

An electric field is a physical field that surrounds every electrically charged particle, such as an electron. It represents the capacity of a charge to exert an attractive or repulsive force on other charged objects within its vicinity. Often described as an invisible aura, the field explains how particles can influence one another through seemingly empty space without direct physical contact, acting as the medium for electrical influence.
The triboelectric effect is a process where certain materials become electrically charged after they come into frictional contact with a different material. A common example is a cat's fur picking up static charge after running around, which then allows it to attract lightweight objects like Styrofoam. This buildup of static charge creates the electric field necessary to exert force on nearby objects through the surrounding space.
Electrostatic induction occurs when the electric field of a charged object reaches out and rearranges the molecules in a nearby neutral object. This process allows a charged body to exert an attractive force on things like Styrofoam peanuts without touching them first. It demonstrates that the space between objects is filled with an active field that facilitates physical interactions between electrically charged particles and neutral matter.
