Naming characters requires the same care as naming children-it creates a crucial first impression. "Queen Esther Alexander Pratt" announces itself boldly while "Sybil Rumple" stands in shadows; "Alfred J. Petticoat" suggests mincing steps while "Sam Slade" implies something rougher.
Physical descriptions that rely solely on attributes often become what Janet Burroway calls the "all-points bulletin"-bland statements like "a tall, middle-aged man with green eyes and brown hair" that fail to create vivid images. Think about your favorite literary characters. What makes them memorable? Often it's not just their actions but the small, specific details that make them feel real-the way they fold their newspaper, their particular manner of speaking, or the objects they treasure.

Point of View: The Eye of the Teller
Description is fundamentally shaped by the position or stance from which we observe and record details. Point of view refers not to opinion but to the literary position from which we describe our story's elements and how the narrative travels from author to reader.
The three main point-of-view methods are first-person (using "I" as a character in the story), second-person (placing "you" within the story's events), and third-person (using "he," "she," or "they" to tell someone else's story). Third-person narration has three variations: objective (relating only outward signs), omniscient (knowing everything about all characters), and limited omniscient (describing outward signs while inhabiting usually just one character's mind).
First-person narration offers clear advantages: a narrow field of vision providing a single focal point for descriptions, the ability to unify theme in loosely plotted stories, and instant intimacy between narrator and reader. This viewpoint limits omniscience-typically by restricting access to just one or two characters' inner lives while maintaining the ability to describe external reality objectively.

Real-life settings naturally draw writers, providing sensory details that create "spasmodically realistic" work. One deeply mined place can yield countless stories-drawing a map of a remembered location with marked sites of significance can unearth narrative treasures. But using real settings demands accuracy; readers expect correct street names, landmarks, and historical details.
Ironically, sensory proofs matter most in nonrealistic fiction. Fantasy writers must first convince readers that events could occur within their created settings. As E.M. Forster explains, readers of fantasy pay extra to enter the "sideshow"-they must be grounded in believable detail before accepting the fantastical.
Historical settings demand more from writers than contemporary ones. While readers can easily visualize modern strip malls or answering machines, historical settings require careful guidance. Writers can position readers in time directly ("London of 1620") or indirectly through description, as Jim Crace does in "The Gift of Stones," quickly establishing a Stone Age setting through details of arrowheads and primitive bartering.

Most stories blend scene (foreground episodes acted out by characters) and summary (background information that covers larger terrain).
