Ludwig Josef Johann Wittgenstein (1889–1951) war ein österreichisch-britischer Philosoph, dessen bahnbrechendes Werk, Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, die analytische Philosophie und Logik des 20. Jahrhunderts neu definierte. Geboren in eine wohlhabende Wiener Industriefamilie, studierte Wittgenstein Ingenieurwesen, bevor er sich unter Bertrand Russell in Cambridge der Philosophie zuwandte.

Sein Tractatus, geschrieben während des Ersten Weltkriegs während seines Dienstes in der österreichischen Armee, argumentiert, dass Sprache und Logik unser Verständnis der Realität strukturieren, und schließt mit dem berühmten Diktum: „Wovon man nicht sprechen kann, darüber muss man schweigen.“ Der karge, aphoristische Stil des Buches und der Fokus auf logische Strenge beeinflussten die positivistische Bewegung des Wiener Kreises und bleiben grundlegend im philosophischen Diskurs.

Später lehnte Wittgenstein Teile des Tractatus ab und entwickelte in den Philosophischen Untersuchungen einen radikal anderen Ansatz, der die fließende, kontextabhängige Natur der Sprache betont. Als Professor in Cambridge von 1939 bis zu seinem Tod wurde er bekannt für seinen intensiven, unkonventionellen Lehrstil und seinen asketischen Lebensstil, nachdem er auf sein geerbtes Vermögen verzichtet hatte. Seine Werke umspannen Logik, Mathematik und die Philosophie des Geistes und verbinden technische Präzision mit existenzieller Untersuchung. Der Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus wurde in über 20 Sprachen übersetzt und wird häufig als einer der einflussreichsten philosophischen Texte der Moderne angeführt, der weltweit weiterhin zur Pflichtlektüre in universitären Lehrplänen gehört.
