Apple's remarkable resurgence in early 2000 was followed by a sudden crisis in the second half of the year. The year began triumphantly with Steve declaring himself "permanent" CEO at January's Macworld after three years of refusing the title. Apple's stock reached an all-time high of $150 in March - an elevenfold increase from $13 when Jobs took over in 1997. Steve unveiled the Cube at July's MacWorld in New York - a minimalist, translucent computer without cooling fans, symbolically seeking vindication for his earlier Next Cube failure.
