Lori Arviso Alvord, M.D., ist die wegweisende Autorin von The Scalpel and the Silver Bear: The First Navajo Woman Surgeon Combines Western Medicine and Traditional Healing und eine bahnbrechende Persönlichkeit als erste Navajo-Frau mit einer Facharztzulassung für Chirurgie. Als Tochter eines Navajo-Vaters und einer weißen Mutter in einem Reservat in New Mexico geboren, besuchte sie das Dartmouth College und die Stanford Medical School und schloss ihre chirurgische Ausbildung 1985 ab.
