The tsar believed Jews deserved their suffering as divine punishment. Alexander appointed the brilliant but corrupt Sergei Witte as finance minister, who launched a breakneck industrialization program funded by foreign borrowing. Within a decade, pig iron, steel and coal production tripled, railway tracks doubled, and Russia became one of the world's top five industrial powers. The Trans-Siberian Railway became Witte's showcase. In foreign policy, Alexander loathed Kaiser Wilhelm II, calling him a "rascally young fop." Feeling isolated, Alexander ordered his foreign minister Giers to pursue a French alliance despite Russia's traditional antipathy toward republican France. In 1894, Alexander signed the formal alliance with France that would eventually lead Russia into World War I. When Alexander died unexpectedly in 1894, his son Nicholas II was unprepared to rule. The twenty-six-year-old tsar had received little training in governance, with his father dismissing him as "an absolute child" in state matters. Nicholas married Princess Alix of Hesse (Alexandra Fyodorovna) just days after his father's funeral. Their marriage was passionate but politically disastrous, as Alexandra's German background and haughty isolation alienated Russian society. Nicholas viewed Russia as his personal landed estate, styling himself "Master of the Land" in the 1897 census. His governance combined traditional pageantry with harsh repression. When Alexandra finally gave birth to a son, Alexei, in 1904, their joy was shattered by his diagnosis with hemophilia. The imperial couple kept this condition secret, creating enormous strain and eventually leading them to rely on the mystical healer Grigori Rasputin. The disastrous Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05 triggered revolution when troops fired on peaceful petitioners approaching the Winter Palace on "Bloody Sunday." Nicholas reluctantly granted a constitution and Duma (parliament) in the October Manifesto of 1905, but soon authorized brutal repressions that killed thousands. His prime minister Pyotr Stolypin implemented significant reforms while maintaining firm control, but was assassinated in 1911 while Nicholas watched at the Kiev Opera House. Russia's entry into World War I in 1914 initially sparked patriotic unity, but military disasters soon undermined the regime. In August 1915, Nicholas made the fateful decision to personally assume supreme command of the army, leaving Alexandra to dominate domestic politics in his absence. Guided by Rasputin, she orchestrated ministerial appointments and dismissals, creating a revolving door of incompetent officials. By December 1916, the situation was so desperate that Nicholas's own relatives conspired to murder Rasputin, hoping to save the monarchy from Alexandra's destructive influence. Felix Yusupov, married to Nicholas's niece Irina, lured Rasputin to his palace where he was poisoned, shot, and finally drowned in the Neva River. The February Revolution of 1917 erupted while Nicholas was at military headquarters. Despite urgent warnings about the collapse of government authority, Nicholas initially dismissed the disorders as minor. As garrison troops joined the revolutionaries, the situation became untenable. Pressured by his generals, Nicholas abdicated on March 2, 1917, first in favor of his son Alexei, then changing his mind to name his brother Michael as successor. Grand Duke Michael, thrust unexpectedly into power, declined the throne unless confirmed by a future Constituent Assembly-effectively ending the Romanov dynasty's 304-year rule. The imperial family was imprisoned, first at Tsarskoye Selo, then in Tobolsk, and finally in Ekaterinburg's Ipatiev House. On July 17, 1918, the Bolsheviks executed Nicholas, Alexandra, their five children, and four loyal servants in the basement of the Ipatiev House. The Romanov legacy continues to shape Russia today. Vladimir Putin has revived imperial symbolism and centralized power, with his entourage calling him "the Tsar." Putin reportedly views Nicholas II as a "weakling" who made the fatal mistake of abdicating-something Putin vows never to do. The continuity between tsarist and post-Soviet Russia reveals how deeply ingrained autocratic traditions remain in Russian political culture, as the country continues to grapple with the fundamental question that defined the Romanov era: can Russia be governed without autocracy?
